Living.

They were buried up to the neck, up to the mouth. Heads alone visible. It was row after row of humans, buried so that just their heads emerged from the dirt.

Living, still living, that was it, do you see, they were stil alive, alive and moaning or crying or screaming or begging, just heads packed so close together.

They were the cobblestones to be. Near the entrance of the cave living and dead mixed together. Ninety percent dead closest to the entrance. Just a few moaning, delirious creatures, poor creatures, poor desperate murdered men. Croaking in the extremity of their agony. Heads flayed. Skull bone already bared.

The living grew more numerous as we progressed. We continued walking, helpless to do anything else, feet landing on scalps, shoes yanking hair, stumbling and kicking defenseless faces.

I heard April’s voice. She was praying.

And me? What was I to do? Apologize to the men whose heads I walked on? Apologize? Apologize, sorry? Sorry? What word was there for this?

I was shaking. Teeth not chattering now, but grinding into one another, grinding so that I was sure my teeth would splinter, leaving me to gnaw on the bared nerves.

Impossible! This place could not exist. Home, I wanted to go home, oh please, please, home.

We reached the end of the pathway. Reached the point where a new trench had been dug, ready for the next victims.

The next cobblestones.

Ready, perhaps, for us.

“You’re probably expecting to see Garm,” Hel said. “Everyone wants to see Hel’s hound, but he’s at the main entrance to my domain. The official Gnipahelli. I’ve tried to mate the beast and have a whole litter of Garms, but of course he always eats the pups.”

What? What was she saying? She was chatting like we were al off on a picnic together.
